my guide to clean beauty
While we focus a lot on what we put IN our bodies, we tend to not focus enough on what we put ON our bodies. The problem with many conventional cosmetics is that they contain many harsh toxins, one being a variety of heavy metals. When a substance passes through the layers of the skin, it’s absorbed through the bloodstream and lymphatic system. In sum, when we put harsh chemicals and heavy metals on our bodies, we’re putting ourselves at risk of absorbing these no-no ingredients into our bodies.
But here’s the thing, Rome wasn’t built in a day and a perfect skincare routine won’t be, either. I focus on replacing my makeup cabinet bit by bit.
I’ve put together a guide below filled with clean skin-care alternatives to conventional, popular products.
Tinted-moisturizer
Looking for non-cakey coverage? Check out this tinted moisturizer by Juice Beauty. It’s a two-in-one as it includes an SPF that’s on the higher side! You can even choose an oil-free version if your skin is on the oilier side.
Concealer
Like foundation and other makeups, concealers usually pack in parabens and sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). I recently found this one made by Pacifica at Whole Foods and it’s magical and SO affordable.
If you’re looking for something a little thicker, go for this foundation stick by one of my favorite brands, W3LL PEOPLE.
Blush and bronzer
Not only is this blush/foundation palette formulated without parabens and SLS, but they actually added nourishing, natural oils like Jojoba oil and botanicals.
Shampoo and conditionerThe same concept applies to shampoo and conditioner as it does makeup. Putting harsh chemicals on our scalp exposes us to toxins that can potentially seep into the bloodstream. Prose is a brand that I have come to respect as they go to the extreme when formulating custom, clean hair care. They formulate without common toxins like SLS, parabens and NON-GMO ingredients. They take you through an entire series of personalized questions to create a custom hair routine for you.
Non-toxic moisturizer
If you’re looking to really keep it simple, go for non-refined coconut oil rather than store-bought moisturizers. I feel like it makes my skin softer and healthier, anyways. Plus, a little goes a very long way.
Non-toxic deodorant
Here’s the thing with non-toxic deodorant, you’re still going to sweat but you’re not going to stink if you choose a good one. I finally found a good one, but it took a lot of trial and error. You can find the one I'm loving here.
My advice to you is just to start somewhere and don’t feel overwhelmed, I know there are a lot of choices out there!

Arielle
